[Article] Idol worship [Fans and Kim Hyun Joong]

By Tan Kee Yun

This duo can get pretty hardcore over K-pop star Kim Hyun Joong.
Miss Candy Lim, 26, and Miss Jo Ng, 23, have attended Korean language classes ("to understand what he's singing"), bought all his albums, DVDs and photo-cards, and have cleared an entire month's worth of leave just to "prepare for his arrival".
All to profess their love and admiration for the Korean heart-throb.
When asked what they are planning to do in the lead-up to Kim's much-anticipated fan meet here early next month, Miss Lim said: "We're making banners, light boards (boards with light sticks stuck on them), as well as presents for him.
"We'll also be buying him flowers and booking a maxi cab to follow him around."
Kim may not know what hit him when he touches down at Changi Airport.
Miss Lim, Miss Ng and several other members of the Kim Hyun Joong Universal Fan Club will be there to greet him, all ready to to smile and shriek for their idol.
Miss Ng is the president of the club and MissLim, the vice-president.
The women, who both work in the hotel and tourism industry, set up the fan group last September.
It has more than 260 likes on Facebook.
It is the only fan club in Singapore that is officially recognised by Kim's management, they claimed.
So good, this boy
"I've adored Kim Hyun Joong since 2007, when he was still part of the boy band SS501," said Miss Ng.
"Among the five guys, he has the most mesmerising eyes."
But it's not just his looks that caught their attention.
Unlike other K-pop hunks who tease the opposite sex with their bad-boy behaviour, Kim embodies obedience and good-naturedness.
"He's very gentle, filial to his parents and supportive of his family members' ventures," gushed Miss Lim.
"Last year, he opened a fried chicken shop with his younger brother.
"Also, he's super hard-working. If you compare the old videos of him dancing as part of SS501 and the latest ones from his solo releases, you'd see that he has improved by leaps and bounds."
Back in 2010, the girls flew to Seoul, South Korea, just to catch SS501's concert. Each spent around $3,000 (inclusive of concert tickets, merchandise, airfare and accommodation).
It was a big sum, but Miss Ng and Miss Lim said their parents don't nag them about their idol-chasing indulgences.
"I use my own hard-earned money, so it's okay with them.
"My mum has become a K-pop convert because of me," said Miss Lim with a laugh.
